How would a modified 300ex (mid-range cam, 11:1 piston, porting, valve springs, Hinson clutch, K&N, White Bros. pipe ) compare in speed and power with a stock 400ex. I plan on modifying my lil 300ex because I like it's smaller stature. It has the WB silencer, filter, header pipe, ITP tires, trimmed plastic (looks hip), steering damper, Renthal bars (banshee bend, DG bumper and skid plates). I ride in the desert mostly on tight rocky trails (where the reverse gear comes in handy ), but sometimes need to fly scross dry lake beds and wider trails. So..if anyone has experience with a modified 300ex, please write back and let me know your thoughts

Hey Trailshooter,
I've got a '94 300EX with the following mods. to it:
DG pipe, Airbox holes added, K&N filter and increased jet size from 122 to 140

The engine may take even more jet, judging by a check of the spark plug and she pulls real hard through all the gears. Needless to say I'm quite pleased with the few modifications I've made avoiding pulling the motor apart to maintain reliability. I don't pretend that its anywhere near the speculation on the 400EX performance, but your setup sounds like you must be close to the factory 400. I'm curious to read if anyone else has details about your posting here.

An impressive list of "go faster" mods, but I see no mention of suspension upgrades. Faster is good, but faster without a commensurate improvement in suspension can be downright scary. I'd suggest looking at some aftermarket shocks as your next investment.

You are absolutely correct hot shoe. Speed and handling must go hand in hand to make a safe ride. Currently I'm focusing primarily on the engine. Planning, though, to upgrade the suspension with +1" A-arms, Works Steeler shocks w/ resevoirs, Douglas Ultimate wheels, same ITP XCs, and maybe a 2" longer axle. Thanks for bringing this up.

Your 300 sounds like it's a step hotter than the 300 I built for my wife, so it ought to run pretty close to a stock 400. But - the suspension on a 300 is a far cry from the 400. My wife's 300 has a lenghtened swingarm (2") which helps keep the front end down, and cuts down on that annoying end swaping thing that the 300 wants to do when you pound thru the woops. I recently put a set of works shocks on the front (stock length) and that improved the ride and handling- but still it doesn't compare to the 400 I ride. I do see your point in keeping the 300, as over all I think the 300 does handle better in tight stuff when compared to the 400.

I would buy an old 350X top end they are mean machines, A popular and great idea is taking the top end of of a 350X head, sleeve and cylener then puting it on the 300ex then u cna bore and stroke it and maybe port it, I know of a few ppl that have done this and it put them up to 396cc and went from 18 hp to 34hp, its alot heaper than buying a 400ex u get more hp for your money

Well, I'll just say what I have done in the past year with my 300ex. I got a Performaxx Pipe and a K&N filter and then a jet kit. It has a power pick-up but it does require a few more mods to be as fast as a 400ex...

I have a 98 300ex w/ a fmf pipe k&n filter and jet kit, wiseco 11:1 compression and it is no where near a 400ex mine won't even outrun a scramler500 I think w/ a cam I could beat the 500 ut not the 400ex I want a cam hope to get one soon and modify the rev-limiter then I could beat a 400ex top-end but that's all.

Superman...as far as the Scrambler 500, are you trail riding/racing or drag racing?. I'm sure a drag race between the two would end up being the Scramblers victory, but on the desert trails I ride...HMMMMM...300EX all the way. As far as the 400EX, it's a winner all the way around. But I don't have a 400EX and so I fiqured bumping up the horsepower from 18hp to 25hp on the 300EX will be enough for me (at 160lbs) to keep up with my buddy's (190lbs)400EX.

A drag race of course,me and my friend w/ a 300ex blow away the 500 in the woods. He don't even like to ride in the woods anymore.
