Default Idle changing!?!?!

Ok first i apologize for the name well to my question.. my buddy has a 02 rancher 2 wheel drive no electric shift. Last year he got a new jug piston well lets just say a whole new top end... Ever sence his rebuild he has had problems with his idle...The idel would go up really high then go so low it would die.. he would shift into neutral and it would rev to the sky then once in gear would run fine till he stoped then ether rev up or die.. Realy strange Hmmmmmm well i was wondering if y'all had any answers to this mystery B/C my yamaha has never done this nor have a heard of it... thanks in advanced

P.S. the reason i am posting this is B/C his computer crashed

Seems like this has to be a carburator issue. When I have had an erratic idle, it has been clogged jets from dirty gas. A good carburator cleaning and flush out the fuel tank, is a good place to start.

yes probably an air leak. Try wiggling the carb and the other intake tubing around and see if the idle changes from it.

sounds like air , spray wd-40 around intake hose and carb idle should smooth out. And that would tell you air leak.
