What gearing is the best for my 88 r w/ 18" tires stricly running MX? Best for getting holeshot, corners, straights, etc. I have 13/38 now, what do you guys reccommend? Thanks.

We need some more info to make a better suggestion. Engine mods, swingarm length etc. It all makes a difference.

I run 14/37 on mine. The only reason I went that high was under the recomendation of fellow riders and my parts place. But my motor is heavily done up, so it can pull these very well.

But I was told you needed a very strong motor. Stock will not do.

with that 14/37 can you holeshot in 2nd? I had 14/38 but I felt I was lacking acceleration so I went to the 13. This helped some but 2-3 gear are really close and 2nd gear holeshots are key now. Oh yea, my engine is pretty heavily modded w/ porting, hicompression (must use race gas), PTR pipe, carb ....

I actually have not tried the 14/37 gearing out in an actual race.

The one race I did compete in with the new motor, I had 14/38 gears. I did very well in the holeshot, near the front of the pack, but it was also my first time racing with the bike completely done.

During the race I threw the chain (noon o ring and very old) twice. I was in second place and could not see the rider behind me, when the chain feel off the first time. After the race, I went to K&K and picked up new sprokets and chain.

I have played on the 250r a little since the change and seems to be fine. If I need to go bigger on the rear next year, I will. But the racers in my series are all running this gearing.

Like I said though, my motor is awesome. Paid a lot of money for it to get done right. Compression I think REP said, was 15:1 and "well over 200lbs compression." He told me that if I ran regular gas at all, I would destroy the motor. I asked him if he meant put a hole in the piston, he replied, "No, completely shatter the piston."
