250ex nerfs would fit on a recon, but they would look out of place. Floorboards do the same thing, and would look more at home on the recon.

For power, there's not a whole lot you can do. The only real cost effective things are to get a good aftermarket exhaust (no dg's or cobras), and get a good uni or k&n air filter and prefilter, remove the airbox lid, and rejet it. That will give you a few more hp, and it'll sound wicked too.

Anything else you can do to a recon isn't effective enough to justify spending the money, if you're not satisfied with the power maybe it's time to move on to a faster quad. I put about $400 into power mods on my recon, and still ended up selling it a year later because there just wasn't enough power to do what I wanted to do, and the suspension wasn't good enough for my riding either.

the airbox is protected from flying debris fairly well because of it's location, but mud and water can still get splashed in it from time to time, that's why I suggested a prefilter. It waterproofs the filter to keep water and mud from getting sucked through, and gives you more runtime between cleanings.

Also, you may be surprised about the trade-in value of a recon, when I traded my 99 recon in for my warrior the powersports shop gave me $2200 for it, that's $100 more than I paid for it 4 years before that! Of course I put some money into new tires and wheels, exhaust, filter, and a top end rebuild, but that's still very good for a quad that was beaten hard for 4 years. You could probably trade your recon in for a slightly older 300ex.

Try keeping your weight towards the back, and when you start getting bogged down rock it side-to-side. It also helps to stand on the rear rack to keep all your weight on the rear tires, and even jump up and down on it if you're almost stuck. 2nd gear is a good gear when you're going through mud. And when you get in the deep stuff, try to keep the racks and exhaust above the water so you don't damage your engine.

And after you're done riding in mud, clean it off good and spray everything down with wd-40. This lubricates everything, and prevents rust.

The biggest dangers to your engine will be getting water in the air intake and if it stalls out, water can also run through the exhaust and cause some problems. When you see guys with the quad completely submerged they have custom snorkels that move the intake and exhaust above the racks so they can go through deeper water. The stock airbox snorkel goes up inside the gas tank cavity, so you want to avoid getting the water any higher than the seat. Once it gets as high as the "RECON" decals on the gas tank you could start sucking in water, which is never good. If you are going to be going through water or mud that deep forget about my suggestion of removing the airbox lid, you'll want to keep it on for deep water. A k&n and prefilter is still a good investment even if you keep the lid on.
