Has anyone in here had problems with the brakes on your 400ex? Just curious.

I have not had any problems...But they were recalled for the rear pads.... My dealer said that they wear quickly or fall off the backing while your riding...which would ruin your disk.

Since I have already changed pads in mine a few times...they would not make good on the recall...But I did not expect them too.

Thats the first time I actually saw an ad on my local news for atv's of any kind...even though it was a recall.

I know the recall is from the problem of both brake pads being placed on one side of the rotor instead of opposite sides, but I was wondering how sure are you that the problem was with the rear pads? The reason I ask, is because my dealer checked out my front pads.

I had people tell me that it was not the front but the rear...and I had others tell me the opposite.... I asked about both when I stopped by the dealer. (The local news said rear)

I know I never had a problem with the stock ones at all...They just wore out..But they do that from time to time. (actually I hate trying to keep pads in any of my wheelers)

They did not even look at my wheeler because I told them I had already changed both front and rear a couple of times. I will be by the dealer on lunch...I'll see if I can get a better answer.

Yes the recall was for both pads on the same side of the caliper, not pads wearing quickly. This one is a no brainer. If you had the problem it should have been noticed before it ever left the dealer's lot.

All the ATV's I have owned with single piston rear calipers have worn brake pads very quickly, I believe it has to do with the size of the pad vs the amount of inertia of the rear axle, tire, and wheel assembly.

Honda announces recall of all terrain vehicles

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORRANCE, CA - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is voluntarily recalling approximately 126,000 All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Two models of Honda ATVs are being recalled for separate problems, both of which could result in riders losing control of the ATVs, crashing and suffering severe injuries or death.

Honda Rancher TRX350 ATVs

A mounting bracket on the front suspension of the Honda Rancher TRX350 models could be welded improperly to the frame. If this mounting bracket breaks, the vehicle could lose steering control and crash. Honda has received 98 reports of improper welds. No injuries or incidents have been reported.

These ATVs are red, orange or olive green. "Honda Rancher" is written on the sides of the ATV's fuel tank. The following chart lists the Honda TRX350 models, years and Vehicle Identification Number ranges. The VIN can be found on a bracket behind the front bumper.

2000 TRX350TM Rancher 478TE240*YA000001 to 478TE240*YA006853

Honda TRX400EX ATVs

The brake pads on these the Honda TRX400EX models could have been assembled incorrectly. This can cause the brakes to fail, resulting in severe injury or death. Honda has received 53 reports of the brake pads assembled incorrectly on these ATVs, resulting in two consumers suffering injuries, including a sprained wrist and bruising.

These ATVs are red or yellow, and their model name, "400EX" appears on both sides of the fuel tank. The following chart lists the Honda TRX400EX model ATVs, years and Vehicle Identification Numbers ranges. The VIN can be found on the front-left-side frame down tube.

2000 TRX400EX 478TE230*Y4000001 to 478TE230*Y4028370

2000 TRX400EX 478TE232*Y4000001 to 478TE232*Y4001140

2001 TRX400EX 478TE230*14100001 to 478TE232*14100600

Honda ATV dealers nationwide sold both models of these ATVs from July 1999 through September 2000 for between $4,000 and $6,000.

Consumers should stop using these ATVs immediately, and call their local Honda ATV dealer to schedule a free inspection, and repair if needed. To locate their local dealer or for more information, consumers should call American Honda at 888-289-8226 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or access the company's web site at: http://www.hondamotorcycle.com/locator/.

Registered owners of the vehicles have been notified directly by American Honda about the recall.

Trust me it is in the front brakes. Mine was on the right side when sitting on it. Both pads were on the left side of the roter. I took it to the dealer before honda sent out the recall, they had already had another 400 come in for the same problem
