Default Looking to buy A 250r...

Hi, I've been off this forum for like 2 years since I sold my quad. I'm now 18 years old and studying mechanical engineering. I'm in the process of buying another quad: My dream quad. I found a 87 250R for sale which looks really good and isn't too expensive (Prices dropped a lot in the last 2 years here with the arrival of the 450 thumpers)...

I would be paying it about 2200$, I need to change the swingarm bushings and front wheels bearings. It has a FMF pipe + some boyesen reeds and that's about it (Pretty stock for a R hehe)

The quad look really clean IMO. I'm interested in knowing what people think about it and if it would be a good deal.

Thanks

Pierre-Yves

judging from the picture it looks like a deal, but for all I know it's on it's last leg. A picture is nice sure, it looks good. Make sure you ride before you buy and look at it very closely. A lot of things can get worn out in 20 years....a 400 ex although not at fast would more then likely be in better shape and can be had for around $2500 (around here) I used to have an 88' R that was absolutely stock, it was really quick and all but I did put a fair amount of money into it, and still didn't trust it all that much. Unless you are totally set on an old 2 stroke I would look at the 400 EX or even Z 400 which is a nice quad that can be had fairly cheap used.

Thanks for your reply... What do you means 'on it's last leg'?... And AFAIK, we can't get Z and 400ex for 2500$ around here (On top of that, those quads are rather slow)...

and yes, I'm totally set on 2 stroke

I mean it may look nice but it could have sloppy main bearings, or could be on it's last bore and readyy to pop, something like that. NOT saying that it is just saying that it could be seeing that it's 20 years old. When I had my 250R I did LOVE it no doubt but it did require alot of maintenence and a fair amount of money to keep it in shape. After I sold my 250R I had a KFX400 and allthough it definatly didn't have that 250R snap I did like the fact that I didn't have to spend extra $ on mixing gas, and I didn't really have much to worry about if I went on a long ride. Reverse wasn't really a big deal for me, having it on the KFX was nice at times but not needed at all. I also had my girlfriend on the back 90% of the time and it was alot easier to carry her on the KFX then the R. I know most people will not agree with riding two people on an atv like the KFX but we never had a problem and I didn't ride like I was alone.

i agree with him. as he said "dont get a 2 srtok unless your realy set on one" that is very VERY true. i had a 2 stroke bike and it was a 2002 and it dint run as if it was new it also took a lot of maintence to keep it in tip top condition. i have a 400ex and it is a lot slower then the bike but i love way more. not much maintence and the 4 stroke is AWESOME. if i were you i would go with something with a 4 stroke in it.

Thanks for all your inputs guys...

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate 4 strokes, I just don't have the cash to buy one. As for the bore thing and main bearings, I forgot to ask the guys. I know there is a brand new top end in it and that's about it. Will call him again soon...

i only looked at the first pic and thats an 86 frame not 87 --its an easy tell that gap in the bar that mounts the bumper, if you look at my list of mods and theres things on there not listed , and im into mine for 2500 and mine is in way better shape then that--- listen for that counter balencer if they sit, it will sing you a pretty song-LOL- go there an finagle with cash --
oh go to www.macdizzy.com an you can run those numbers on the frame an engine an it will tell you what yr it is
good luck i love my 250r
oh go ahead an mix that gas an haul ***
an all my mods are what i put on it it came with renthal bars-nerfbars like those but blue an in the box new -and a ported &polished fresh rebuild
i would go no higher than 1800 cash and tell him for 2200 thats a hefty down payment on a new 450 there your leverege

I still cant find anything that compares to my 250R. Dont get me wrong the new 450 are great but I would take my R over them anyday! with the exception of the ltr450, which I havent ridden. I'd say get it, mod it, and enjoy the look on the faces of people when they how fast a 20year old 2stroke can really be

Thanks again for all your inputs guys! I'm taking them into consideration

Question like that, I heard many things about the 250r performance and once tried a stock one, but how does a healthy piped R normally compare to others quads (400ex, z400, raptor, banshee) with equals mods...

Some update on it...The top end and main bearings were replaced in january 2005 and the bike almost didn't run since the owner got a deal of a yfz450. only thing to replace are front wheels bearings, swingarm bushings and shifter oil seal...
