I DID it!!! BOUGHT an 06 450R
#21
I'm going to order the DMC, just hope the wife doesent find out! Next decesion is to run with no air box lid or just vent it.
WFO450R, I'm sure the grumbling you heard about with the starting issuie is some people are trying to give it some gas when trying to start. If it back fires it can break the starter. If it want start with no gas then CHOKE it. These 450R's are all cold blooded as are most honda's.
Have you guys visited these other 450R sites like prm-atv.com

I have not actually had any trouble starting the quad, just have heard that the issue gets worse once you start placing mods on it. Thanks for the help, will keep you all posted on the starting once I open the thing up and find more ponies!

Yep, I kept the Kodiak. It's also one sweet quad. I was going to trade it in on the 450R but they wouldn't give me squat for it. Now the wife has something to ride and I got a 4 wheel drive when I need it.

The HRC kit is the cheapest mod for the most hp you can do.
It has detailed info in the booklet that comes with the it for installation
and adjustments. The kit really wakes the motor up and if all the
adjustments and parts are installed correctly it runs better, starts and
idles better too.

Hey Camo,
I may not have made myself clear about Warranty. I believe Honda is one of the most reliable products on the market, but a warranty is worth $$$, and no matter how good a product, they can blow up. (You can even extend the 6 month warranty to 2 or 3 years for very little, I extended to two years for only $69.) If you do things that void the warranty, then there is no sense in having one....and that is OK too. My point is simply: it is always good to know if you are voiding the warranty, even if you elect to do so anyway.
Hard starting: I have heard this before as well. I found that I had to learn not to touch the throttle when starting the 06. This was not an easy change for me because I have been flipping the throttle to start quads for twenty years. If I do not touch the throttle it starts right up, cold or warm. However, when it gets really hot, I then have to flip the throttle a bit. This is with the HRC Kit and, of course, they may all be different.
My HRC Kit book calls for a rebuild every 15 engine hours, if you are racing. But Racers usually rebuild their engines every week anyway. I now have about 40 hours on the HRC Kit, and it is running stronger than ever. But I have only made about 40-50 race runs at Glamis, so that is probably less than an hour of actual racing.
I'm sure you can build a system stronger than the HRC Kit, but not without significant expense. The Kit is easy and cheap, and doesn't void warranty, and the performance is excellent. BTW - when you do build, if you do not change the Cam and the electronics, I seriously doubt you will keep up with the HRC Kit. Just my experience.
Also, the HRC Kit engine likes a little octane boost, so I mix in about one quarter race gas.
You asked for suggestions....that's all these are, from a five month owner who has run this Honda hard, and I have beaten every quad that has pulled up alongside at Glamis. I am still looking for a chance to race the 450R Suzuki.
I do know one thing for sure....you will enjoy this Honda!

Just to clarify, you will not void the warranty on the whole quad if you change a certain thing on the quad. It will just void the warranty for items directly related to the item you installed.
I can see that you like your DMC exhaust. Where did you see an evaluation of it?
Getting the HRC kit is a good choice for the '06, unless you are planning on getting a full exhaust anyway. With the right exhaust and a good cam you will rocket past an HRC kitted '06 every time in a drag.
