Default Finally! 400ex

Well after many years of wanting a sporty quad, I have finally bought one. I picked up a 2001 400ex (got a good deal on it too). It has a DG pipe, K&N Air Filter and I think it was ported. This bike has so much pep. I'm just a little bit worried about driving it too fast though. I mean, if I drive it wide open in 5th for a minute, is that bad? People tell me that i twon't blow up but I'm a little worried that I would blow it up. I'm thinking of changing my gearing but that depends on whether or not the engine will blow up if held wide open in 5th.

I wanted to take the 25" Swampfoxes off of my fourtrax 250 and try them on the 400ex but my dad told me that I will burn the clutch out if I do that because the 25" are far to big and heavy.

So if I wanted to change my gearing, should I put a 16 tooth on the front or go smaller on the rear? I'm thinking that if I do buy a sprocket, I should also buy a 14 tooth sprocket for the front just to see how much torque I can get. Suggestions?

technically, as long as you have stock ecu and rec limits than you wont blow your engine. you are worrying to much ride like you stole it!

CONRATS MAN!

Running it wide open won't hurt it unless it is geared real low. Not to mention it's hard to hurt any EX or XR engine.

I was pretty sure that it had a rev limit. My friend told me that the 400ex has no rev limiter but I always thought that it had one because of what I read on the forums here. So basically, holding a 400ex wide open in 5th with stock gearing, DG pipe, K&N Air Filter and with it being ported will not blow up the engine?

Oh and what is ECU? Also, most of my riding is done in 5th gear so should I gear up or leave the gearing the way it is? I do "putt" around in 1st sometimes and I like the slowness of 1st. If I gear up, I'm afraid that if I'm ever in a tight trail or something, it'll be quite hard to not stall.

Jed,
If you have ever rode with myself or mark you would come to the quick realisation that blowing your 400 EX would be next to impossible. You have seen how mark rides his, he is fifth to the bar almost all the time (he had no choice if he wanted to keep up to my old DS) not to mention numerous smoke shows, jumping, racing, beating, and beating some more. They have to be one of the toughest bikes ive ever seen.
Like paintballbanshee said, RIde it like you stole it.
And besides im sure I.G.A. is paying you enough that if you blow it you will be able to bore it out and still have money to spend. Then it will be that much faster.
Oh and Congrats, i thought I heard someone over in your area, but wasnt sure who it was.....
