450 Long Term Test Results.......
#1
The 06 quad has virtually the same engine as the CRF450X dirt bike. The July issue of Dirt Rider has the results of a long term test of over 200 hours, much of it racing. The engine looked excellent! No valve problems whatsoever, and the exhaust valves needed adjustment only once. Rings were in spec. The only obvious wear, was some scuffing of the piston skirt. They ran Honda HP4 oil.
If you follow the dirt bike forums, there have been problems with the transmission locking up if the bike is ridden at high speed on level ground for a long time. No problems with this transmission! Best to run 50-100cc's of extra oil (above the weep hole) in the transmission. Some are running a full quart.

I don't think the CRF450 engine is as bad reliabilty wise as a lot like the dirtbike forums have been saying. Ever since I started looking into getting a 450 I have done a lot of research and talking to a lot of CRF owners at the track. Pretty much of them has said the same thing, done over rev it and keep fresh oil in it and they do fine. A lot fo them don't even check there valves unless it shows signs of them being out of spec, like trouble starting or backfiring more than normal. A lot of guys that I have spoken with have 04's, and last winter was the first time some of them has even cracked open the engine.
Granted, these aren't XR's, but for a full blown race engine they seem to last a while when maintained properly.
BTW, I have also heard that adding a little extra gear oil is the thing to do on these engines.
