Jet Kits and Air Filters for 400EX
#1
I bought a Yoshimura slip on pipe for my 05 400 EX and now i want to do some other mods. I want to get a K and N filter.....and also a jet kit. First questio.....are K and N filters better than say an Uni Foam Filter? Which one has the better protection? Also about the jet kit......i was going to buy the K and N Kit and was wondering how hard they are to install? Ive had my carbs off on my Banshee a few times and tore them apart and cleaned them and they worked fine. I was just kind of unsure wether I could do this myself without messing it up lol. Anyways if you could help me out guys i would appriciate it. Even if you had some comments on other brands that be cool too.

I'd forget the jet kit and just go to the dealer and get the main and pilot jet thet you need or want to start with. If your using the k&n then i would also install the outwears on it. If you do a search on the net about rejetting and read for a day or two then you"ll know more than most. There are some great how to site on rejetting out there. Some people dont like K&N ,but I do. I think most problems come about on how they mount it . Make sure it fits good and tight. Might even apply a small ring of grease where it seals at. As far as the size I'd tell the parts man to give me the next biggest size pilot and bump up a couple on the main and you should be in the ball park. Remember to adjust your fuel screw after installing your new jets. Do some reading before you start and you will have no problems, I hope.

You don't need a jet kit and your stock filter will do just fine. If you really want power, you will have to go with a big bore. If you want my opinion, I would just leave the bike as if for now and save your money. When your ready, you will be able to find a used 450 that will have 10-15 more horse and much more potential for less money than building yours up.

The whole point of this bike is to have a dependable and fun wheeler thats not going to get towed home and not going to wreck my wallet. I guess the real question i have is after installing the slip on pipe will the bike run lean? My friend bought a Suzuki R450 and he said after his full yoshi system it was running lean and actually cutting out on him. Mines been fine so far. Any thoughts guys?

Well, then I think you have made a good choice of quads. For about $3.50 you can buy a new main jet about two sizes up and be happy. When your buddy installed the full Yosh, did he put in the cherry bomb and remove the air box lid as well? Keep your stock air filter on the EX for longevity and just as much power.
