Do ATV deraillers exist?
#1
I want to put a 14 tooth front sprocket on my 400ex to get more "pep" throughout my gearing. I realize I'll lose my quick 5th gear top end if I do this though. What I would like to do, is to somehow make a derailler system on my front sprockets. I'd like to have both the 14 and the 15 on the bike so that I can shift through them just like a bicycle. It would be like turning the 400ex into a 10 speed rather than a 5 speed.

I think it would be a pretty cool thing to do. Although it would double the weight in the front, I doubt it will affect performance by a whole lot. You would probably be able to gain more performance than lost performance. I'm sure they don't exist as I've never heard anyone talk about it before. I'll see if Google has an answer...

The problem I see is that unlike a bicycle drive system, there is a lot of thickness and not a lot of give in an atv chain/sprocket setup. Components are going to wear out way to fast unless the sprockets in use are always perfectly lined up. I'm sure something could be engineered, but in the end, is it really going to be worth it? You might be better off designing a quick change sprocket system and incorporating a chain tensioner in the design instead.
