450r speedometer
#1
Ive been looking for a speedometer for my new 450r and so far ive only found 1, the trialtech computer, i'm wondering exactly how it hooks up because it lookes like it has one of those magnet deals that you paste to the wheel and the computer reads it everytime it spins around, and i really dont like those and from experience theyre really not accurate. I was wondering what would be the best speedometer for my quad maybe the trailtech is the best, if anyone owns one i would like to know how you feel about it and if its worth buying. thanx

I hooked one up to my z400 a couple of weeks ago and it was not that difficult. The magnet is built into a bolt the replaces one of the stock rotor bolts and the sensor is bolted into a hole that you drill into the rotor shield. It is a very solid install. Of course you do have to take the wheel and brake caliper and rotor off, but it is not hard.
As far as accuracy, I tried the "measure the wheel" technique, and the on the test run, it recorded 60 miles on a known 18 mi trail, so I calibrated it using the stock settings that is suggested in the manual, and on the next test, a 45 mi run with my wife's Bomb 400xt, it was within 1/2 mi of her odometer. Plenty close enough for me.
It has a real nice, easy to read LCD with large numbers and has background lighting.
The handlebar mounting works quite well, but I may pick up the billet "dashboard" and mount it there. It is pretty nice but pricey at around 90 bucks.
My complaints are: The programming instructions are not very clear, and the unit does not change modes easily. Also, if you want to change or miss one thing, you have to go to the start of the sequence and start all over.
It really has more features than is needed, which complicates set up.
I still really like having it, and would highly recommend it.
Hope this helps.

However, if I have any problems, I will post them here.

For the price of the speedo, you could buy a entry level gps, and mount it on the handlebars. They have speed, odometer, and top speed capture.Plus you can log waypoints, and trails. You can also use the compass, or gps function. All in all, it much handier, can be used on any quad, is extremely accurate, with no calibration, simple easy hookup. And it can be removed, when not being used, for theft prevention, in two seconds. Its easy to move from quad to quad, if you have more than one.
Just my 2 cents.

Not a bad idea, but entry level units are not as convenient. I have a low cost gps, and the screen is very small and hard to read, especially the speedodometer. Maybe a more expensive one would be better. At my age, the large screen on the Trail Tech is worth the price. Sometimes, I just like a dedicated unit.
What brand and model gps do you have? I will take a look at it as I am ready to upgrade.
Thanks!

I have the yellow etrex, and got in at a pawn shop for 20 bucks.Im not gonna feel too bad if it breaks or someone steals it. I guess i wouldnt be that comfortable with a 300 dollar unit.
Seems to me, they all have small screens and numbers.
I really like having a gps along, it does everything i need it to do.
