06 400EX Vs. Old 400EX
The first thing you said is you want a fast bike. Your last post detailed how you are going to mod it to make it faster. You also said that money is not a big factor. Why not get a 450? Out of the box it has about 10 more horsepower than the 400ex. Currently, my 450 has almost double the horsepower that my stock EX had. Getting on a stock or 440'd ex is like going in slow motion for me now. Just trying to help here, I have owned both a '00 400ex and modded it like crazy, a '05 450r, and now an '06 trx450r.
Also, if you look around at all, you can find an 02 or so EX with mods for much less than cost on a new one if that's the way you want to go.

The maintenance schedule is similar on both bikes actually.
Why did you post this if you already made up your mind it sounds like? You say you want a fast bike but you will actually have one of the slowest 400+cc sport quads out there with the EX. As long as you are not that serious about fast and more serious about fun than you will be good. After you start messing with the EX you maintenance will likely jump up considerably.
