Default 06 400EX Vs. Old 400EX

Im in the market of a new bike, im not sure i looked at the specs and im deciding on whether to get a 06 400ex or a good conidition 02 or 03, i noticed the 03 is 20 lbs lighter but the 06 carb is 2mm bigger, does anyone own both these bikes and tell me which seems to work better or which is better? im just curious and want a fast bike .. thanks guys

The older models have better top end gearing. 15/38 compared to the 14/39 the new ones have. Plus I believe reverse slows them down alittle.(I could be wrong).

I honestly doubt you'll be able to tell a difference between either. But I would buy new if you can afford it. At least you will know exactly what you have and how hard its been ridden.

the biggest thing is probably reverse. It is nice to have, but not a necessity in my book. The new ones do look sharper, but that is just plastic. I agree that it is nice to buy new, especially if you are the type to keep it long enough to get your moneys worth. On the other hand, an '02/'03 is gioing to be a LOT cheaper. Any reason you aren't looking at Z400's too?

not puttin a bad word out for suzuki but i dont like them, im more of a honda guy, hondas have always treated me good. Im not worryin about money, i can prolly get a 06 cheaper than i can get a 03 .. my uncle is a dealer and he gets his bikes in the box straight from honda and he can give me one for the price he gets em, or if hes feeling generous .. maybe even a little less ... but yea, Z400's are better all around, accel better, handle better, they do everything better but wheelie which they still do good. im just not a suzuki man.

If you can really get a new '06 as cheap as a used '02/3, why did you even bother to post this ? I would go new in that case hands down.

I saw a piped 06 go against a piped 01 and the 06 beat it, could have been the rider but the 06 has the bigger carb which does more than you think

I've owned a '01 and a '05, and I have to say that the newer versions seem to be a little quicker. I believe it is mainly due to the closer ration transmition. Plus reverse is a plus.

Who knows how hard that 01 had been ridden. It is probably about time for a rebuild on the 01 lol.

Well if i got the new 400ex it'd be cheaper than the 02 or 03 but prolly not by much i was just wondering if the old ones worked better because they we're 20lbs lighter, if it was any difference i was gonna go for the old one and get one that was mint condition or something but i think i'll go for the '06 .. put a jet kit on it and pipe and new airbox and maybe after a while i'll buy the edelbrock carb for it. thanks for all your help guys i'll be gettin this bike soon once a make a little cash over the summer
