Default 300 EX chain & sprockets

Hey guys, I am going to buy a '96 300 EX from a friend. It is all stock and will need a chain and sprocket soon. I weigh 200lbs and mainly ride trails so top end isn't ultra important. When I replace the chain and sprockets should I stick with stock gearing for my size and riding habits or lower it a bit to give it more low end grunt? Thanks for any imput.

I am arounnd 200 pounds, and never felt like the 300 lacked low end power. I was, however running 20" tires (stock was 22"), so I did gain a little lower gearing there.

Agree with RR, I have and 05 and put my stock rear tires from my KFX on the 300 ex (22 to 20" tires. This gave it a little more grunt but makes it wrap out faster. The thing I don't like about the 300 ex is being 240lbs and the 22" tires, I hit the plastic on the tires a lot (scrap). So I think I'm going to keep the 20"s and gear up a little.

With the stock 22's you may find better performance, gearing 13/39, opposed to the stock 13/38. I ran the 13/39, with 22's on a 300ex, that was cammed, and ported.

Ok, thanks guys, I just thought that while I'm replacing them anyway I would see if there was a better ratio. I may consider that 13/39 combination since the tires are almost new and I believe they are the stock size 22's.
