200sx fourtrax compression
#1
I have a 1986 Honda 200sx fourtrax, and am inquiring about what the compression readings should. I measure a max pressure of approx. 125PSI. Does that sound about right? My issue is that the unit idles great, but when I touch the throttle, it spits and sputters. If I do not release the throttle, it simply dies. Air cleaner is good. I am going to try a new plug. Carb need cleaning? Rings/ valves? (does not burn oil) Your thoughts would be appreciated.

When you checked the compression...were you holding the throttle wide open? Then did you try a small squirt of oil down the spark plug hole and then another compression test, to see if the oil helps to raise compression.
But if the motor starts, and runs, youve got enough. The symptoms point to fuel, or carb.
Id look into the mixture screw settings, and replace the gas in the tank if its over 3 months old. If those two things dont help, then id say the carb needs a good cleaning.

Thanks for the info. I can tell you that I have been running it all summer and suddenly, after driving about 5 minutes one day, this started happpening. I did pull the air cleaner to see if it was plugged. It was not, but after cleaning it in gas over the years, it is simply disintegrating. I thought maybe some pieces have went into the carb and lodged themselves in their. I guess taking the carb out and cleaning it will be my next step. Again, thanks for the info. Any more thoughts, let me know.l
