buying a 2003 250 ex question
#1
My son wants a 250 ex and I found one.
the bike looks like it is in great condition.
it has new bearings in the front, back, and all around.
new front brakes and the rings were replaced in the motor.
I went and looked at it and had it running for a few minutes and noticed the motor ticking. I figured the lifter was bad or needs adjusting.
I know it was driven by a young guy(driven Hard).
So, I was wondering if it is a good buy and easy fix?
Ps:the bike is for $2600 canadian
please let me know your comments.

What is suspicious is that the RINGS have been replaced. This is one of those engines, that if it just gets routine maintenance (oil changes and valve adjustments), it should run for 20 years without ever needing to go into the engine.
If they have been into the engine at all, that is a sign to me that the engine has been abused.

My thoughts exactly. A honda 4 stroke motor, should easily go 10 years, even if it gets beat on, before needing rings. Id pass on that one...theres just too many good ones out there, to settle for this one.

That's a lot of work that needed to be done to a 2003.
My wife's is a 2001 and still in great shape. Too bad we're clear across the continent from each other. She's selling hers.

You could always negotiate a valve job into the deal. My only concern is that you don't pay for the quad and find more serious internal damage after you take possesion. If a valve adjustment will fix it you are only looking at paying a decent mechanic for 1 to 1 1/2 hours labor.

Thanks for all the replys and to answer a question from (Scooter86)-
yes I know the young guy and the bike a bit and it was very well driven.
The rings were replace because of not doing preventive Maintenance.
When he first got the bike there was nothing looked after including the oil
and it started smoking. As soon as it was noticed it was fixed along with other wore out parts.
It was his first bike and he just drove the _____ out of it and that's it.
thank you
