Rancher tire questions
#1
OK, so I am a 4-wheeler virgin and just popped my cherry by buying a 2006 Rancher 4x4 ES. The question for of the day are in regards to tires. I was told that I needed to buy some slime to put in all my tires because I will be riding this beast around alot of mesquite trees, thorns, etc. So, I check my tire pressure before I start and it reads about 6.0 psi. The sticker on the back fenders says that proper inflation should be 3.6 with a .4psi variance. So why would the dealer have them inflated more than that? What do you keep your psi at? Keep in mind that I will not be going very fast that often and most of the time I will be using this thing for deer hunting, working cattle, etc. Any suggestions?

Congrats on a nice machine. My tires were over inflated from the dealer as well. I lowered them to the recommended pressure. Rides better. As far as the punctures go... I just asked the same question a few posts below. Here it is:
How do you fix a flat in the field?

Dealers always do that. Start with the pressure on the sticker, and experiment up and down from there. I find I get a lot of "bump steer", if my tires aren't adjusted to suit the conditions. Play around and see what works best for you.
As for Slime, I don't like it. I have found that it will just dry up and leave a nasty hard crust on the inside of the tire. I prefer Fix-A-Flat. I ride thorny desert, and it has never let me down!
Keep in mind that when running a liquid in your tires all the time, you may eventually have rim corrosion issues!

the tires are aired up high to keep the machines from bouncing too much on the truck, put them down to around 3 to 4 psi and see how that works for you. anything more and you could pop a tire on a stick or something. I dont think you need slime, I've never had good luck with it. It just pisses the tech off when you get the tires changed, it gets all over the place.

well i have to dissagree, i put slime in my tires 2 years ago and it has gotten me home many times. i've ran over cactus and all kinds of nasty terrain, i have seen the green slime oozing out of a hole and it pluged it never got a flat. then when home i used my patch kit and pluged the tire the right way. as for trail fixes i keep a small compressor and plugs with me in the storage box in the back of my rancher. i got the compresser from napa it came with a bottle of slime and it fits great with plugs and a towstrap and winch accesories.
just my thoughts. though.
