Default Am I safe from dust?

Sorry. I put my question in and accidently pressed enter. What I mean by am I safe from dust is I have a K n N air filter on my 04 TRX450r and I hear everyone saying that K n Ns let in dust and dust will ruin the valves. So I went and bought a K n N Precharger ( filter cover, filter sock, outwear, whatever you want to call it). This costed 32 bucks so I hope it will keep my engine safe from dust and it's about the only way to to keep more dirt out of a K n N. Will this precharger really work to keep dirt out of my engine?

Yes, it will help. Where K&N's seem to lack is the really fine dust that you get from running down a dry dirt road or mx track. Keeping your filter clean and properly oiled is the best thing you can do now. If you find yourself in really dusty or muddy conditions, it is good to have the airbox lid on also. The best way to see if that filter is working for you is to check for dust and grit in the intake. That area should be spotless, if it isn't but you have kept up on filter maintenance, consider a foam filter like Twin Air or Uni instead.

I say go back to foam! I ran K&N's (with Outerwears) on everything for a while years ago, and every time I would change the filter I wiped the inside of the intake boot with a white towel, and there was always a fine coating of dust........it just isn't worth the risk!

The stock foam setup is kind of restrictive, and the stock UNI units have a problem with a weak plastic collar on the wire cage that supports the filter. It will eventually collapse and is prone to popping off.

The best thing out here is the ProDesign ProFlow setup. It has an aluminum collar that won't collapse, and the wire cage is very secure. It has a custom UNI filter. Get one and sleep better at night! http://www.prodesignracing.com/main.htm
