400ex sprocket questions
I have a 2000 400ex and put a 14 tooth in the front and a 39 tooth in the rear, does anyone know if this combination will help me get better take off speed and more wheel spin , i dont really care about top speed i like to ride on the track and i wont be hitting 5th gear very often if at all anyway. i figured down one tooth in the front and up one tooth in the rear should be the best way to get good take off speed. someone said that i would get more take off speed with just the 14 in the front and leave the stock rear sprocket.im mostly looking for that peppyness i want to be able to come to a burm and just whip my bike around and throw a nice roost doing it.

By gearing DOWN, you will get more BOTTOM END POWER, but at the expense of top end speed. By gearing UP, you will get more TOP END SPEED, but at the expense of bottom end and a snappy throtle response.
Sounds to me like you want to gear DOWN, so you either want a smaller sprocket in front or a larger sprocket in back (or both). The rule is one tooth change in front = three teeth in back.
In front, I went down a tooth from stock on my 400EX, and it proved to be way to much (even when running 22" rear tires). It was great fun for play riding and jumping, but out on the trail it just wasn't practical. I would gas it out of a turn, and the front end would clumb to the sky and lose steering control. I finally settled on one tooth larger in back and 20" rear tires as a nice compromise.

I went down a tooth on the front of mine and I LOVE IT!!! We ride tight woods and MX tracks and perfer it anytime over stock. I run 20" tires and the stock rear sprocket. For our trails, the stock gearing just isn't practical. I was bogging the motor all the time in 2nd, or wound tight in 1st. Now I can ride at a faster pace in 2nd with the rpms right where it pulls really hard.
