2001 Recon (not ES) will not shift info first. Shift fork bent?

2001 Recon (not ES) will not shift info first. Shift fork bent?
Hello,
I have a 2001 Recon (manual shift, not an ES), that won?t go into first gear. When you try to shift down into first, you get nothing. It?s like first gear isn?t even there. All other gears are perfectly fine, even reverse works great. A buddy of mine said it sounds like maybe the shift fork is bent. What do you guys think? And, if it is the shift fork, how difficult is it to replace? I?m guessing that you have to take the engine apart, but hoping not.
