For the people here in disagreement, just run what you want. The rest of us who know what is going on will stick to the oil that is made for our engines. If the book says use it, then use it. If you don't, any engine failure could just be your fault. Reconranger is right and that's it, plain and simple. I have to explain why auto oil is not supposed to be substituted for motorcycle oil at the shop all the time. There's always a customer that wants to go the cheap way. I would rather spend and extra $20/year to protect my transmission than end up paying $600+ to fix my tranny b/c I was using the wrong oil.
But, the people that disagree are probably some of the same people who think high octane fuel gives you more power. You just can't seem to beat that in their heads either.
For every person that says they used car oil and never had a problem there is one other person who did have a problem from using car oil. And for whoever said that the oil pump going bad wasn't from the oil, what do you think wore the oil pump out? Either the oil broke down early or you didn't change your oil often enough. The only reason an oil pump should go bad is dirty oil or lack thereof.
I will just sleep well at night knowing I have the correct oil for my engine in it right now.

I just take the old oil that I drain out of the wife's car and put it in the ATV. Doesn't everyone?

Okay, now that I have that out of my system.. I'd advise anyone with a wet clutch to use only oils that do NOT have an "energy-conserving" additive package, and I'd also recommend that they use a motorcycle-specific or ATV-specific oil if they have an integral transmission. Ever notice that the viscosities like 10w40 or 15w40 (common motorcycle and ATV recommendations) are not listed as "energy conserving"?

The additives in an "energy-conserving" oil are not good for the wet clutch, and the additives in a motorcycle or ATV oil are designed to work with the higher pressures created by helical cut gearing. Now, which brand to buy helps keeps my fingernails short and ragged, but in the end..oil is oil, and it's only an engine. Do I feel flames licking at my *** as I type?

Gotta run, the wife is after me to change the oil in her car, and the Honda needs an oil change too, perfect timing once again..

Another two cents gone,

Gawd I love oil threads!!!!!

anyone have some very bad news for me from using this oil?
I can tell you this; Delo is VERY good oil. I use Rotella, but I would have no problem using Delo. I just use Rotella because we had an account with Shell for our fuel and lubes.

My take on this? I have used Rotella in motorcycles, lawnmowers, blown engines, turbo'ed engines, nitrous engines, diesel engines and every other engine I have owned. What do I know about this oil?
A. It's inexpensive
B. It will work for and is rated for diesels.
C. I used in many wet clutch combo's and NEVER slipped a clutch. (And my GSX 1100 put out more than twice the ponies of any stock ATV on the market.)
D. I have used it in many gear to gear engine/tranny combo's. NEVER had an engine or tranny oil related failure.
E. I cut my filters open to see what's going on inside of my engine. All has always been good.
F. It is NOT an energy conserving oil so it is safe for wet clutches.

Are there specific ATV oils better than Rotella on the market? I have no doubt there is. Is there a better cost/benefit ratio oil for ATV's on the market? Not in my mind there isn't or I would be using it.
One guy on this forum said he changed his big buck syn oil in his ATV every 6 hours!!!!! I'm not quite sure how I could do that unless I changed the oil on the trail. I did the math on that and showed how bad the cost/benefit ratio was by doing this. He did not want to hear that. That's fine.
If the guy rode his quad 250 hours a year he would have to change his oil over 41 times. Then; if he paid 7 bucks a quart for his oil and used 4 quarts/change he was paying out over $1,150/ year on just oil changes!!!!!!!!!!

I like syn oil, we use it in one of our race engines........I just think the cost is too high. If I lived in some place where the temp got below feezing all the time I would use syn oil all the time. I don't, so I don't. If I had oil related engine failures, I would think about using syn in all our engines. I don't so I don't. If I had a syn oil sponsor, I would use it in all my engines. I don't, so I don't.

Cost/benefit ratio is a BIG deal in my racing game. I use the cheapest part that will do what I want it to do, and not fail. This way I can spend more money on more speed part to go faster and beat the competition. Are you spending your money in the right places?

It's just what I do. Buy any oil you want and pay what you want for it..............the competition will love it.

You'd swear some of you guys were rocket scientists. Its simple guys use what the bike manufactures recommend and don't give us the b/s about what you use in this and use in that, who cares. Your not any smarter than the next guy. The bike manufactures had studied this over and over and done test with all this other crap. Bottom line USE WHAT THEY RECOMMEND or risk having problems.

I would never complain about the price of HONDA oil. Its the cheapest thing you can buy for your bike that will make it last.
