I am going to agree with the soap and water too. Cheap, readily available, and works great. The specific cleaner will work fine also, but steer clear of carb cleaner.

 

I have always used kerosene to clean air filters and I have never had a problem. My Honda manual actually recomends it.

Kerosene here too. I don't mind using gas either , just be sure to dry it fairly well, oil after.

Carb cleaner, even the new stuff will destroy your filter..........

 

Someone say some more about the kerosene method. I'm super-cautious and buy the good stuff. Can I really pull a super cheap-out and not suffer major consequences?

Yes JimmyHoffa, you can use Kero or Gas, but what do you do with the dirty aftermath? You can't use it in any engines, so you can either burn it or dump it somewhere. I prefer the No Toil stuff, works good and safe to wash down the drain. I only use foam filters, and do the same with other filter oils and soapy water though. The end result is cleaner. A bottle of dish soap costs a couple bucks and will last forever if you are just washing filters with it.

Cleaning with Kerosene/gas?? I keep one screw top jar -- rinse the filter in the gas,give it a shake, 'n if it's still dirty then I clean it in fresh stuff --- saving the old stuff for washing parts. Drain it, dry it, and coat it lightly with oil.
But hey -- don't sue me when you burn down the workshop , your ATV, and the house next door.
