Gosh, lets see here....uh... If I've been a member here since '01, then, I've got to be at least 6.... right? BTW, if you're packin' enough a$$ to call me junior, then maybe you could convince my mommie to pay my mortgage payment this month? I was saying that the 300 is an older design...... not quite the difference one would think the extra 50cc's would provide. Pardon me if you have one and it offended you, you can trade up later.

Define a "step down" then bro. The 300 has better suspension, better handling, full disc brakes, chain drive, more power, and a fully manual clutch. It beats the 250 in every performance aspect except for perhaps ease of maintenance and ground clearance. I suppose the sport clutch on the newer 250 may even out a bit of the performance deficit, but not much. I own neither, but if you want to supply the machines, I would be happy to race you, you get the stock 250EX, I'll take the 300, K?

One thing they should have done on the 250EX is along with the Sportclutch they should have given it a proper 1-N-2-3-4-5 shift pattern, and let it start in any gear as long as the clutch is pulled in.

ok, no affense but i think we should maybe get back on track here....
now, your kids, like everybody else has said will probably endup rolling the quad or crashing it......i've rolled plenty of times and crashed badly once.....i learned from my mistakes greatly and now i know how to ride.....i think a 300ex would be a little much for a starter unless you meant start out on the 250ex and then later move up to the 300ex?
idk...i'll just wait to see what your response is and see if i can put a little more info in...

Lots of good info offered, not much else I can add except. GET YOUR WIFE A QUAD TOO!
She would probably love it. Mine does and neither of us are young. Our kids are grown and gone.
I got my wife a quad 6 years ago because my son and I rode bikes and would have to leave her at home or in camp when we rode. She couldn't handle a bike.
Within 2 years of getting her a 250ex both my son and I switched to quads. My wife mow rides a 400EX and I have a 480R. Most of our camping trips are centered around riding even though our son is no longer around here to go riding with.
It is just about the most fun you can have as a family, I wish I had started many years earlier!
I would highly recommend that you have your sons (and you if you're inexperienced) take a safety course too.
