get your parts cheap on ebay.
whats wrong with it? how could it need a 1000$ in parts?
Zip tie the cracks in the fenders, put some new tires on it. mud sharks on the back trust me there the best.
maybe some axle and wheel bearings, change all oils. put in a oil and air filter and run the crap out of it.
i would fix it. but i would fix it cheaply. i would use used and aftermarket parts off of ebay.
dont go spending a grand on it. just get it strong and reliable. and have fun on it. spend 500 tops.

I had the same bike about 6 years ago. It needed a lot of attention such as: fenders, seat cover, tires, ignition, exhaust, battery... and lots of little parts. The plastic was the killer. It looked and ran great by the time I was done with it, but I lost a ton when I sold it. I ended up spending around 1200.
Plastics are something you can definitely live without being perfect. If you plan on keeping the bike for a long time spend whatever makes you happy, but dont expect any return. I would just stick with the essentials with a bike that old.
If you need tires I would recommend GBC Dirt Devils. They work alright and are only around 42 bucks each so they are a real bargain.
