Why is it that HÖnda's are so hard to start when cold? What is it about them that makes them start so hard when it's cold¿ My Bayou 220 started yesterday when it was -6º outside. It started with the first pull of the recoil starter. Is it just b/c the way that the jetting is on Honda's¿¿

just my 2¢ worth.

IT JUST DON'T HAPPEN TO HONDA....MY YAMAHA GRIZZLY HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU GUYZ...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW ..

Honda's are lean out of the box. And that's on a 70 degree summer day.

Drop the temp to 15-20 degrees out, the air becomes more dense. Example: a basketball sitting overnight, next morning (air is cooler), it seems to have lost air. It hasn't, the air is just more dense in the basketball. Imagine the air molecules in the basketball are huddled together to stay warm. Actually, the cooler air is more dense because the lack of heat causes the molecules to be less excited.

The outside environment is like this too.
Suppose you have a machine jetted for 70 degree weather. When it gets cold, the air gets more dense, but the jetting remains constant. That translates to more oxygen (a component of air) per given demension than before.

So your carb is "sucking" more oxygen, yet the carb is "sucking" the same amount of fuel (dependent on jetting). This will cause your mixture to lean out.

That is why engines get crankier to start as it gets colder. Solution? Just like philzie said, adjust your idle circuit by turning the fuel/air mixture screw out. This will give your machine more fuel to compensate for the denser air.

After you run the machine for a while to warm it up, the jetting becomes a little richer. The engine heat causes the air coming into your engine to warm - thus becoming less dense. That's why the machine starts easier after its been running a while in cold temps (plus all the parts are good and lubed up/warm).

I adjusted the idle curcuit on both my 400ex and my wife's recon, and they start just like they did last summer.
