450r vs. 400ex
Everything I say below is regard Eastern trail riding....
If you're the type of guy that has an ego go with 450R, because you are always going to want more power. If you're the type of guy that just wants to have fun and your not worrying about having the baddest machine out there, go with the 400ex. For the type of trails we have here on the Eastern side of the states, the EX will have all the performance you need to get the job done as good as anyone else.
But, I did see you said a little track. I don't know if you meant some homemade backyard track, or serious track riding. If you're going to be doing some serious track riding, then the R might be the way to go.

I don't understand why people are so worried about top speed. I could see it if this was a high speed callenge. But for trail riding or MX or gncc riding, how many guys run all out in high gear? In Heuvos (sp) the guy jumps 187'-6" in FOURTH gear!! He could drop a tooth on the front and still be able to make that jump, just in 5th gear, all the while still having a great bottom end to trail ride with. Alot of guys near me ride 450's on the trails. Almost all have dropped a tooth on the front. These same guys do well at our local tracks as well, where you need the bottom end pull out of the turns. Yea, it might make for a little more shifting, but its well worth it to me. I love my 400 for trail riding and track use, and truthfully, I can run with 450's (on trails and mx tracks), it just takes more work on my part. But if I was to ever get rid of it, it would be to get a 450.

Whats the difference in price... If they are kinda close in price get the R, it's liquid cooled and alot more advanced of a motor, if your doing serious track riding the R is the way to go, really tight trails or playriding then get the EX, if it were up to me price would be the deciding factor I dont think you can go wrong with either machine.

I believe the 400EX quad and XR400 dirt bike are the most reliable dirt motors of all time if kept close to stock. These hold over 2 quarts of motor oil and have very efficient oil coolers. The 450R motors have seperate oil for motor and for tranny so the motor oil capacity is much less and requires changing more often. Valve adjustment is a very easy screw and lock nut issue on 400s. So IMO the most reliable way to go with the easiest maintenance is get a 400EX and keep the hop up mods to a minimum. Now on the other hand if you really need to run with the 450s I think it is mistake to buy a 400EX and then do major hop ups because the motor will run hot and you will lose some reliability. From reliability standpoint and ease of maintenance I would actually prefer the Yamaha 450 over the Honda 450 even though most of my stuff has always been Honda.

I can get a 05 450r with nerf bars hrc kit installed by honda with about 10-20 hours on it for 4400 neg.
I can get a bone stock 400ex for 4200 neg.
and where i would get the 450r in in the same town i live in the 400 is about 2 hrs. away which doesn't really matter how far it is i just would like to buy it local.

I think we all know a few of those types lol
I have wondered why so many people were constantly asking or talking about top speed or which pipe is louder or whatever BS type stuff where the result never really helped in the performance area most needed anyhow.
I purposely built mine to have more low end than top end power because its much more usable out on the trail no matter if your flying or just cruising etc, and it makes for a much more enjoyable to ride machine too.
Funny thing is soon as I tried to move the power up the rpm range a little is when I started having engine problems, and I may be redoing things again more like before as to increase reliability (long story lol) and ridability.
Still either way it just doesnt make any sense except for a limited few to put any real thought into top speed, and most should concentrate on acceleration and handling.
