Default Adjusting valves 06 Rubicon

I'm getting close to my 100 mile mark, when I need to adjust the valves on my
06 Rubicon.
I would like to adjust my own valves as I would like to know how for one and secondly the
dealer what $80.00 to due it.
I have the service manual for this ATV, it gives all the information I need, but it's not clear
on which are the exhaust valves and which are the intake.
I'm not going to be doing this for awhile yet, but would like to get any, as they say tricks of the
trade to make this job easier.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Dan

I just helped my GF's dad do his 06 Rubicon a couple of months ago.

It's pretty straight forward. The exhaust valves are toward the exhaust pipe side of the head, and the intake valves are toward the carb.

When you get the little top dead center indicator on the flywheel, make sure there is play in both rocker arms. If not, the valves are in overlap between intake and exhaust. Rotate the engine one turn back to TDC between compression and power stroke, and there will be play- indicating the engine is in the proper position to adjust.

Getting the body and tank out of the way is a pain the first time if you haven't done a late model Honda lately, but once you have done it once it is pretty quick and easy.

jeffin is right as the worst thing is just getting to the valve covers. on my 05 rubicon i did the 100 mi. valve adjust and as i recall, once i got the tank shroud off, i propped the fuel tank up with a couple of wood blocks. in finding TDC, it was easier to pull the spark plug, use a flash light into inspection hole and use the pull starter rope to find the "T" mark. mine were really tight from the factory and actually had to adjust the idle down a little.

The ones I did were tight, too. I wasn't sure if it came that way from the factory, or if the valve seat and face had worn in a little.

I'm glad that was somewhat helpful. Let us know how it goes, or if you run into any snags.

I didnt realize the valves were supposed to be adjusted so early.

I have 126 miles on my Rancher 420.
I had originally planned to get them done around 500 or 600 miles.

If I go another 200 or so miles will it affect the longetivity of the engine?
Thanks.

I doubt they would get so far out of spec as to cause damage, but personally I prefer to do that kind of stuff close to on schedule if I can.

I was a bit over on my 1st adjust on my Foreman due to a multi-day camping/riding trip, but when I did check them they were within spec...

Anyhow, for peace of mind I'd try to do it close to what the service schedule says.

My manual says to inspect the 1st 100 miles and then every 600 after that.

Guess Il get it done soon.
