1987 Honda Foreman Fourtrax
I recomend not tapping on the starter on this model. The brush holder will allow the brushes to wear all the way to the brush wire. If it wears this far it will ruin the armeture. On newer Honda model starters the brush holder design will not allow this to happen so tapping on the starter will work for a while. Also do not jump start your quad with a vehicle. It dumps too many amps into the starter (more than it was designed to handle) and will cause more problems internally.
Just for kicks, check if the starter has continuity from its cable terminal and ground. If by chance when the starter was rebuilt and an insulator was broken or an o-ring around the terminal under the fiber washers was not installed it might be simply shorting out when the starter button is pushed.
The spark problem could be a number of things from spark plug cap to bad connection in the wire harness. Seen a number of CDI failures though on that model.
