Some good basic oil info: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
Pick a motorcycle specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA, and you won't go wrong. Best to just stay away from any "car" or "diesel" oils.
Personally, I like Maxima's products. They have the best add pack in the industry (high pressure additives to protect your transmission gears and cam). If you are working on the cheap, they have Premium which is a basic budget priced petroleum oil. For a little more money you can get Synthetic Blend, or for even more money my personal favorite is Extra, which is an ester synthetic. http://www.maximausa.com/
I have not owned a 300 in many years, so I can't recall the specifics about oil volumes, etc.

Ya know I think I'm going to use Shell Rotella T synthetic i.I used it in my kx250f and had no problems whatsoever. That thing would rev to 13000 Rpm,I know the 300 will never reach that kinof rpms without imploding..Plus I can get it at walmart for about 10 bucks a gallon.
