Some good basic oil info: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

Pick a motorcycle specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA, and you won't go wrong. Best to just stay away from any "car" or "diesel" oils.

Personally, I like Maxima's products. They have the best add pack in the industry (high pressure additives to protect your transmission gears and cam). If you are working on the cheap, they have Premium which is a basic budget priced petroleum oil. For a little more money you can get Synthetic Blend, or for even more money my personal favorite is Extra, which is an ester synthetic. http://www.maximausa.com/

I have not owned a 300 in many years, so I can't recall the specifics about oil volumes, etc.

You can use the dipstick for oil amount. Like all jap motors, just rest the dipstick at the top of the hole when checking the level. Dont screw it in.

Ya know I think I'm going to use Shell Rotella T synthetic i.I used it in my kx250f and had no problems whatsoever. That thing would rev to 13000 Rpm,I know the 300 will never reach that kinof rpms without imploding..Plus I can get it at walmart for about 10 bucks a gallon.

Anybody happen to know if the 300ex oil filter crosses to one I can pickup at walmart or Advanced auto? Or is it one of the internal type like the TTR225 dirtbike uses?

Most of the hondas use the same filter, CH6015 and thats a fram number. Wix number is 24944,and Purolator number is ML16815. All others should cross reference to those.
I got the info from this pagehere, theres lots of good info on oils and filter there.
