Along with it's brother the 300EX, it is the ultimate tight trail machine. Mine is an 00, that has to have ~20,000 miles on it by now. All I have done to it in all these years is replace the rear axle bearings.
The machine has great handling, descent suspension, and great ergonomics. It is a little down on power by today's standards, but the engine does have a fair bit of hop up potential with some simple mods. I like the way the engine will lug down for slow, technical trail sections.....just put it in 1st gear, and it will idle on through.
The other choices for trail machines are the Z400 and Raptor 700.

The 400 ex is a great bike in my opinion. I opted for it because i have always been a honda fan. It is very nimble on the trail, and can go when and where you want it to go. Any where from the mountain trails to sand to mud. It can handle it. One thing i like is how light it is. As for hunting, i would probably try to pick up another quad before season starts. You can't exactly slip up on a deer (or haul it out for that matter) with one.

i have an 02 400ex its awsome for me cause i do quite a bit of trail riding but some times i go to tracks (tracks are my favorite) and i perform awsome on the track and trials ive ridden quite a bit of other quads i like the 400ex the best for all around riding next to the raptor but the raptor is a bit wide and can get a lil tricky on trails. But if your getting a 400ex youll have tons a fun trails and tracks. but i reccomend a nice 4x4 if you live in a heavy woodland area that have alot of steep hills and big rocks, and if you like 4x4's i got the new 750 king quad thats a nice quad fast and will go over almost anything.
