With the cold starting problem why don't you run a hotter plug and richen up the fuel mixer? Shìt i live north north in ontario canada and Even my CBR900rr will start in the midle of the winter . A hotter CDI is a good answer but they are costly when plugs are cheep to go a couple of # hotter. A jet kit isn't that bad of price neither . It should take care of most problems. Hotter plugs and jetting
That is my 2 cents

Stupid things first. I can't tell you how long i cranked and cranked my 300ex before i noticed i had the fuel switch on off. DUH!
Second thing...you aren't giving it any gas (throttle) are you? You should be starting it without touching the throttle at all.
If thats not the problem, then try the heater thing and see if that does anything to help but i can't see why it won't start in the cold. My 300ex starts right up even when its way below freezing.
I hope you get it sorted out....it sucks not to be able to go out in the snow.
