My 400ex has developed a ticking noise in the top end of the engine. I checked and adjusted the valves. It did not change anything. Any ideas what to look for next?

 

What type, and weight oil do you use?

 

my '01 has ticked since the day I got it. Honda Dealer told me it was normal for the 400.

 

i had a 250x honda one time and it develpoed a tick that as time went on kept getting louder it sounded like it was comming from the top end , here the cam chain tensioner was bad, and in due time the cam chain had to be replaced ... hope i was some help

 

In the summer time I use shell rotella T 15w40, in the winter I use 10w30

 

Try using a 20/50w oil, I know the oil seems thick but because of the engine being air cooled, it heats very quickly. I've been running that in mine for over a year and zero problems. It sounds smoother ever since. Hope this helps
