I don't know what your quads problem is but I know honda has had problems with the ES model shifting due to faulty angle sensors(sensor limits shifting abilty when quad at extreme angles to prevent accidental shift to higher gear.Sounds like the same symptoms..hope this helps..

There are some known issues with the angle sensor, but the angle sensor measures the travel of the shift motor/mechanism to verify to the computer that the shift motor moved, has nothing to do with the position of the machine, just had to clarify that.

I'm looking to buy a Honda ATV but am worried about this ESP stuff?

From what I've read on topic boards some years of Honda's have some type of ablity to shift manually. Unsure how this is. Something about a lever has to be installed. One person sad he stuck on a wrench to the shifter shaft?

Are there any web sites that explain the history, development and fuction of the ESP for Honda?

Having problems with my ES right now. Honda said their was water in the sensor. Do not buy an ES if possible.
Just another problem to worry about 2 miles in the woods.
The manual shift lever is located in you storage in back or under you seat attached to the bottom of it. My 2007 Rancher has a little compartment on the bottomside of my seat to store the lever and tire pressure gauge.

Is the manual shifter in a useable location? Could it just be used all of the time and never worry about the ES junk.
