I'm talking really tight and technical trails where you will never get out of 3rd gear and where a smaller quad and/or a quad with a torquey low end is a huge advantage.

Remember, I use to own a Z myself. I found the 450R way better for the open desert, and the 400EX way better for trails. The Z falls somewhere in between the R and EX, so for me it was just an extra machine that I didn't really need. If you can only own a single quad that has to do it all, the Z is probably a good choice.

I say get the z, and if you don't like the gearing, change a sprocket. Simple (and cheap) fix.

definitely get the z400. that price is a steal and its a great quad. it can be made into whatever you want. doug gust raced it for how long with the 450s and kept up with them and it would definitely be a great quad for thew trails. if you dont get it you are nuts

alot of the trails I ride on my Z are 1st and 2nd gear ,so don't talk like a Z can't do technical trails in stock form ,thats what I like to ride ,

I agree with you to an extent... I ride a lot of tight technical trails on my Z too.... but it is true that the 300ex and 400ex can go slower...

I've seen a lot of newer, or beginner riders complain the z400 stalls in the woods a lot, or they have to fan the clutch. And I've ridden with people that are slower, and when they are in front in the technical sections they slow down to the point where I bog unless I pull in the clutch .....

It's not that it can't be done, there are just better machines for slow, technical riding. The z400 likes to rev a bit and play in the mid range..... obviously a slight gearing change would solve that. Drop the front tooth one spike and the z400 would be just as good in the tight woods as any 400ex....

If you can swing it, get the Z. After unloading your 300, you will probably be out less than a grand and have a more modern, advanced, and newer quad. That is a pretty cost effective upgrade in my book If your riding consists of such technicality that the 400 is a step down, a utility would be a better choice anyways.

how slow do you need to go??? on my z400 i can just putt around in first gear and touch the front brake it is slows right down to like walking pace. It may bogg a little bit but it wont stall unless i really press the brake
