Default atv oil or car oil ?

i have ran mobil 1 syntheic in all my machines in my z400 and the vinson and belive me it dosent make your clutch slip .i rode the crap out of my z for 2 years straight and i rode it hard . i clutched that bike like it was a 2 stroke banshee and i never had a problem.i had to change the water pump and when i did i inspected the clutch witch still looked like new. and my vinson has a very hard 1000 miles on it with 26 inch mudlites and a clutch kit with no problem.but this is just my opion. You could't pay me enough to run low quality non syntheic oil in my 8000 dollar investment.

another thing the only diffrence from a quad only syntheic oil and say mobil1syntheic is like 10 dollar diffrence mobil 1 is like 5 bucks a quarts and the quad only special oils are like 10-15 dollar a quart range. And syntheic oils handel heat a hole lot better then regular oil regular oil breaks down pretty quick when exsposed to high heats. syntheic can handel up to like 500 degrees before it breaks down.

You can read here what Mobil itself has to say about running Mobil "car" oil in a motorcycle: http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo...ycle_Oil_FAQs1

They themselves recommend Mobil 1 MX 4T (now renamed Racing 4T) rather than their own car oils, because of the additive package which protects the integrated transmission.....it is API SG/JASO MA certified!

It's so freaking simple, if one just picks an oil that is API SG and JASO MA (just like your owner's manual says!), you can't go far wrong.......

vinson-By running a "car" oil, you are not getting the best protection possible for your engine. You seem to be proud of the fact that you have done this and "gotten away with it"......

That is like braging that you had unprotected sex with a hooker....and didn't get any diseases!

I have been running "car oil" in all of my Honda thumpers and my Jetmoto's with no problems and a lot of money saved. The Hondas have been run over 2 decades like this. And one of them for over 3 decades. No clutch problems or adjustments have been needed on any of them.

I also would never have sex with a hooker, protected or not. Interesting way to look at motor oil though reconranger.

Reconranger, if I found an oil that was 3X's the price but was a better oil than the Maxima that you use, would you use it?

Ha ha ha ha, now that's funny.

Pappa, I have the '96 300 and my manual says to use Honda 10-40 oil.
So that's what I do.
I bet your manual says the same.
Case closed. (For me, anyway.)
That being said, I am strongly considering changing over to Amsoil 0-40, just because I live in a cold climate and also because every where I go, no matter what the climate, I hear great things about it.
In the meantime, I reckon the manual probably knows best which oil I should dump in that little hole.
Cheers!

Why do you all want to use car oil in the first place? What's so wrong with the regular factory stamped oil? I mean that is what they tested in the MOTORs that THEY DESIGNED.

There has been many posts on this subject alone.

Far as those disiel guys saying that 15W40 is the best, well I live in northern MN and one of those guys hade that in his 650 Kawi. Took it out ice fishing and wrecked the motor. Ya I know it's not the right stuff for 0 degress but still a disiel guy thinking that he knows something more than us "motorcycle techs".

For me its about timing. Some of my hondas have been around over 20 years, some even more. when I got these machines no one cared about car/mc oil (at least as far back as i can remember) It was more important that you changed it often, not what kind/brand you bought. I personally dont know of anyone who has burnt up a clutch because he used "car oil" in his mc/quad. I also dont think the average rider will ever wear out a clutch regardless of what oil he uses. Now if your a expert level rider all bets are off. The average expert level rider pushes his machine harder in about a hour than the average rider does in a whole year.
