Default 450r Oil question

I recently changed the oil in my trx 450r for the first time. I went to the honda dealer and told them what i was doing and they gave me two bottles of oil and a filter, but when i got home i ws reading on the bottle of the tranny oil and it said it was for two stroke engines ONLY. I read in the owners manual and it said to put in 10w-40 oil into the transmission which is the same as the engine oil and the trans oil they gave me was 80w/85w(2 stroke oil i have is Honda pro HP trans oil which is listed as an oil in the owners manual). I had read where people use this 2 stroke oil in their 450s but my question is which one of these oils is right? Why would the honda people give me 2 stroke oil for my 4 stroke atv? Should I use this 2 stroke oil and hope the honda guy didnt pick up the wrong bottle or go ahead and follow the owners manual....hmmm

Default 450r Oil question

The 2 stroke oil is for the tranny side of the quad which is the right side when sitting on it and the regular engine oil is on the left side...I would change the tranny oil also since you jsut changed the engine oil...Just make sure you have enough oil in both sides when you are finished and all should be good...Make sure the filter is in the correct way for the engine or else your engine will no longer be working...any ?'s let me know I am under my friends name right now, but you can contact me under bombrider04.

Default 450r Oil question

I Changed the tranny oil along with the engine oil when i changed it the only thing i didnt do was change the oil filter. The only thing i dont know is what oil I should use for the tranny if i should use 10w 40 like the owners manual says or 2 stroke 80w 85 like the honda people say and if it would hurt it.

Default 450r Oil question

IIf i were u i would not use the two stroke tranny oil. I think its too thick. Just go somewhere and get 10W40 and make sure it is JASO MA for the tranny side.

Default 450r Oil question

A good reference on oil for your 450R. Everything that pertains to the CRF dirt bikes, goes for your R: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

On your TRANSMISSION SIDE, you can run an API SG/JASO MA motorcycle specific engine oil, OR one of the transmission specific lubes like Maxima MTL or Honda's own HP Trans Oil.....this is all just like in a 2-stroke. Honda's HP Trans Oil is specifically mentioned as one of the spec'd oils in your owner's manual, but you seem somehow to have missed that (???). Unfortunately, Honda needs to update its trans oil packaging label to reflect the use in newer 4-stroke transmissions.

It is not a well known fact, but engine and trans lubes have DIFFERENT viscosity scales. An 80W/85W gear oil, actually has the same viscosity as about a 30 weight engine oil. Sooooo many people are just ignorant about this, and think that an engine oil is to "thin" compared to an 80 or 85 weight gear oil, to be used in a transmission! http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/visc.html

On your ENGINE SIDE, you can run an API SG/JASO MA or MB motorcycle specific engine oil.

My personal preference in oils for my 450R is Maxima Extra, 100% ester based synthetic in both the engine and trans sides. Maxima has the best additive package in the business, to protect high pressure areas like between the gears in your trans side, and the cam in your engine side. http://www.maximausa.com/products/4s...synthextra.asp

Default 450r Oil question

thank you recon ranger that cleared alot of questions up I did see in the owners manual the spesific oils to be put in but, as i didnt know that tranny oil and engine oil have different weight ratings, the weight and oil types were in conflict so I just thought it meant a different kind than what I had. Thanks for clearing it up I will probally use the oil from honda next oil change.
