so we tore into my 400 last night. the results were shocking to some. stock jets with a k&n filter and slip on pipe. ended up jumping to a 178 and its still a little lean. the only other size we had was a 195 and that was way to much fuel. rode it good and hard today. those new tires i got really bite. ever one else would spin up hills and i would wheelie up them. i wish i would have brought my camera when the grizzly rolled down the hill and parked on a tree tho.

Vos83, I believe Jasonb meant to say the stock rear sprocket is a 38, the front is a 15 for years 99-04 and changed to a lower gearing of 14/39 in 05. Do you still have the stock rev limiter? I wouldn't worry about over rev in 5th gear unless it's an after market limiter with internal motor mods. I do suggest trying different sprockets to get the full benefit of 5th gear. Front sprockets are cheap compared to the rear but 1 tooth on the front makes a lot of difference.
I agree with kgcool's comment about the ticking noise that Honda 400ex motor's make but it never hurts to have a mechanic listen to it.
Jasonb, I wish I would have known about the motor mounts. We used the 450r mounts and a welder. Did the kit come with radiator mounts as well? Even though we had to do some fab work it was still better than putting more money in the ex motor that was good before I had to oversize everthing in it.

I dont really want to go any bigger on the front due to the case saver not being usable then. i should really do something in the rear tho. i think it is geared way to low. i still do have the stock rev limiter. but we came to the conclusion that my clutch is not stock. it pulls much harder then a stock clutch.
as far as the ticking goes my buddy will check the valves when he does his in a couple weeks

dude the header is stock an fmf bowerbomb will give you up to 10% hp gain when i put mine on i could tell the diff.</end quote></div>
if you're gonna get a powerbomb, why not get a cancer pipe (megabomb, i just like to call it that because of the MASSIVE swelling/expansion chamber) I bet you could mod/rebend a megabomb to fit
