86 trx 250 drum removal
#1
I've recently gotten a 1986 trx 250. I am trying to remove the rear drums but can't get them off.Is there something special to do to get them off or do they just pull off with a puller?

Are you sure it is a 1986 and not a 1981
I looked to see on the part site and found that 1981 had drums but the later models are disk brakes.
Click here for a parts break down
Well you can try releasing the break adjustments and warm the center of the hub with a propane torch lub it with liquid wrench and try tapping it off with a hammer best to make up some kind of a puller or a slide hammer if the part is that stuburn.

Once all the axle nuts, locking washers and shields are removed, back off the adjuster all the way.
Now look at the drum where the axle slides through it. Yhere is a sealing o-ring there that may look like part of the drum because it is rusty. Take a pick and pull it out from the center pf the drum. The drum will slide right off without it there.

You just may have to pull the axle out of the swing arm assembly and have NAPA automotive to press the drum off.
Or since you have the unit removed from the swing arm, put the nut on the end of the axle be bold and heat the center hub red hot with Oxo-Acetylene torch, and bang the axle like a spear on a solid surface making the weight of the hub do the work.
It must be rusted badly in place.
It may be a 1986 with a 1981 rear break drum replaced by the previous owner.
Why this is possible? I may speculate it was swapped out with what ever would fit and cost affective at the time.

I used a big rubber mallet/hammer to remove the drums from my old 86' TRX 350 Foreman full time 4x4 , and also my old 93' Suzuki LTF 300 King Quad 4x4 ; with the rubber mallet/hammer you don't have to worry about busting anything ! The 86' Honda hand 2 bolt's you had to remove in order to get the drum's off , but the rubber mallet work's fine ; hope this is of some help ! williebee
