well thanks for the replies everybody... and i know about the whole "manual shift" thing... my room mate has a 420 manual shift... he says the same thing..

and thank you you Mayorstt... thats some powerful insight, and also something i am not looking forward to..

Anyways here is an update. Abernathy's still has my quad. I called them last friday and they said i could pick up my quad on Sat and i am very grateful they called me Sat morning to tell me that the thing was not fixed and the problem still exsisted. Honda doesn't seem to know whats wrong with my quad and i am only getting more frustrated with it as i continue to pay for something i don't ride.

Whoever is working on your quad is an idiot.

I would like to see the real tech story on their diagnostic technique, failure codes etc...

Rubicons DO NOT have high angle sensor failure. Why they are continuously replacing ECM and angle sensors is stupid.

Sure glad they are covering the parts replaced and not charging you

On another note, I wish you were closer to me. There are some simple minor issues they are overlooking.

Maybe I should take that job offer I have just south of Memphis

well just got off the phone with the Technician and he seemsto think its the Wiring harness. Now he is waiting for Honda's Model Specialist to approve him to replace the harness before he can proceed.... ALL I WANT IS MY QUAD BACK!!!!!

yeah i got the extended warranty, but the thing isn't old enough to be this broke!!!

that is why i asked. . .if its broke this much in the begining then your going to be glad you got that extended warranty [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

Sorry if I called them idiots... It yanks my chain when a dealer drags an issue like this out with a customer.

In all my years I have never had to replace a wire harness other than on units invovlved in bad wrecks ( mainly bikes )

There is a few things that may cause the problem you are experiencing.

- Out of adjustment on the shift linkage, not tripping the reverse switch at the lever or bad connection at that switch (bad switch) circuit back to the ECU

- Bad speed sensor or poor connection in that circuit

- Bad gear position switch, shorting between 2 positions trying to tell the ECM it is in 2 gears at once ( when tested for continuity it will pass all tests when testad as outlined. Some techs will not check between each gear wire to check for a short that way as it is not outlined in the manual) or a bad connection at the switch connector or in that circuit to the ECU


- Automatic transmission has a screw shaft that drives the swash plate (driven by the shift control motor) that may have a piece of debris in one of the bearings or a sticky bearing, causing it to stop when the ECU 'sees' abnormal voltage or resistance change. That can be checked by removing the shift control motor and turning the gear with your finger from one end of the swash plate travel to the other, feeling for complete smoothness of operation during the full swash travel.

-Shift control motor issue, Can be checked with a low wattege bulb hooked in series with its connector.


Like I say, I would be surprised if it were a wire harness. A well seasoned electrical diagnostic tech should be able to confirm a bad wire harness by disconnecting all the connectors and tracing it out to find a bad part in a couple of hours, for problems causing your unit to run in the "fail safe mode"


Interesting, let me know what they find that will resolve the issue.

Well after contacting Honda Corporate, I was assigned a "case worker." He called me yesterday and said that Abernathy's had indeed found some lose pins in the wiring harness and that it was repaired and could be picked up today. I will take it for a ride tonight and see how things go. I hope they found it this time!!!

Tn Lemon law is 3 times with same problem in a row .. Sounds like you got ahold of a good ripe one there
