gearing on a 400ex

the front is 15 and the rear is 38 stock, but there are alot of brands to choose from. the smallest rear i've seen is 36 and the biggest is 39, but if you call sidewinder they can custom make you about any size you need. i wouldn't go no higher than a 16 on the front and a 36 on the rear personally.

Front sprockets are relatively cheap. All the mail order places carry them. I like Renthal. Get one that is one tooth larger...try it out and see what happens. Hope you have enough chain slack!
Rear sprockets are more expensive. Remember, 1 tooth in front = 3 teeth in back. If going up one in front is to much (you lost to much low end), then you can go down 1 or 2 in back as a compromise. If you go down in back, having to little chain length won't be an issue. Might even need to shorten your chain.
Note-If you are changing sprockets, it's usually a good idea to replace the chain too, and start out with everything fresh! Remember, a broken chain can leave you stranded out on the trail.....
