If it's backfiring when letting off, then it's too lean caused by dirty carb and or a leak in the exausht system

well that does not make sense though because it started doing that at 6200 feet, and not it does it at my house 3200 feet. so if i am running rich in the mountains why would the backfire be from running lean??

Readjust your fuel air mixture screw. The backfiring should stop and cure most of your driveability troubles. Sounds to me like it was not reset when the unit was uncrated and fired up for the first time at the dealership.

Don't go with k&n they let dirt in. Go with a uni filter (foam filter one that needs oiling) k&n is good for your dealer (they get to rebuild your bike).

My typical mountain ride starts at 4,000' and ends at over 11,000'...that's a 7,000' elevation change in one afternoon's ride. 3,000' change is nothing, and shouldn't bother your machine if it is running properly!

You have to jet for the lowest elevation you will ride at! If you jet for higher, when you return to lower altitude you will be running lean and can damage your engine. Best thing to do is don't mess with your jetting and do this......

Here is what I do: I instal several Thunder Products TPI valves in the airbox lid. I open them when I ascend in altitude, and close them again when a descend. Over 9,000', I just pull the airbox lid off completely. You can rejet for altitude by giving it less fuel, or you can rejet by giving it more air! This method give it more air. It is cheap and simple, and works very well!

I always thought the main jet affected from 1/4 to full throttle. I know it does on the Mikuni carbs because the needle starts to move out of the main jet as you open the throttle. The needle has effects from 1/4 to full throttle, depending on the taper of the needle.

The Uni Filter is a high quality double foam filter very well made I think its a better choice than the K&N. Dial a jet makes a carb adjusting product for running many different altitudes you may try that. I run from 5000' to 10000' with my Kodiak with no problems so you may have other issues.

Do yourself a favor and stay wih the stock filter. All these after market companies making these bogus claims about power gains are usually Big Fat Liars looking to steal your money.
