Default Honda quality is High?

My 2 cents:
I have owned 4 major brands, and compared to the other 3 brands, Honda wins hands down for reliability. None of the manus make junk xcept for the Chinese. Arctic Cat was the worst of the top 4 in my opinion.

You'll also see many companies (oil&gas, surveyors, etc) using Hondas as their "fleet" quads. They buy them because they're simple to repair and generally last a long time. These companies don't need or want the newest, fastest, most innovative....

I want to say thanks for the answers, except for that Polaris rider. A bit insecure I'd say. I like most consumers are guided by advertizing and was looking for a good used ride. The Hondas held too much value priced themselves out of contention. I bought an old 97 Kodiak. after riding if for a while the constant shifting was wearing me out so I wanted an automatic or belt drive. I must have to much time on my hands as I started looking at web sites like this one and others. I started looking for a Rincon or Rubicon. After the pricing shock I checked around for other brands and ride quality is what drew me to the Yamaha. My local dealer had a 2005 Rincon for $5,000 with 11K miles and a 04 Grizzly 660 with 3K miles for $4,400. I had sent for the Grizzly DVD from Yamaha so they talked me into getting a 700. But the price was still too high so the 660 looked like it was moving to my house. The local dealer had a used 700 that they sold new 6 weeks eariler and the price was still higher than I wanted to pay. Still looking at a 06 left over Foreman ES but I knew if I didn't get what I wanted, I be buying again and spending money again. I'm a firm beliver everything breaks. I just wanted to know why every person and dealer talked about Honda quality. Even as they were draging a Rancher 350 off of a pickup with a broke rear swing arm. The dealer told me they weld a lot of swing arms.</end quote></div>

I'm sorry but I feel your insecure. What other excuse do you have for coming onto the Honda forum and talking about all there problems when you own another brand. Has the Yamaha not been treating you right?

If every person and dealer talks about Honda quality, there must be a reason for it.
You mention abou them offloading a 350 rancher with a broken swingarm, Im betting there is some abuse there. I have worked in Honda dealerships for 10 years and I have yet to see a broken swingarm on a 350 rancher. The dealership I work for is a Honda/Polaris dealer, and if it wasnt for Polaris, the service department would not really be needed. The majority of work we do on the Hondas are maintenance and abuse repairs. Yes we do recall work as necessary, and there are some breakdowns, but not nearly on the level of our other brand.
If you worked on different brands you would also notice the difference in the engineering levels of the different companies, none are really on hondas level there. Someone said Honda is riding on there past quality, thats not true at all.
They are still the highest quality machines available. There will be hondas around when all others are gone. Take a good look around, what brand of old machines do you see running around the most...HONDA... yeah you see others sometime, but the bulk of them will be Honda. Ride quality, nothing really compares to Hondas ride quality overall. Yeah... the Polaris is really plush but heavy steering, Yamahas are like driving trucks in the woods, Suzuki and Kawasaki, well, I just have no use for them, sorry, thats my opinion of them.
Ride On!

If I was going to buy one machine & keep it for 20 years, I would by a Honda. Anything Honda makes, they make very well. I buy used atv's with under 200 miles that people can't afford. I keep them for 3-4 years and sell them. You don't loose much money that way. I can only go from my own experience. I bought a 2004 Honda Rancher 400 AT because of Honda quality. The fit & finish was great, always started, & had no rattles or squeeks!!! All my friends ride other brands. We each have a different brand so we can talk trash to each other. The Outlander 400, Sportsman 500, Kodiak 450, Cat blew the doors off my Rancher, rode better, pulled more, & I was always the one getting stuck first. Even a guy on a 1998 Big Bear 350 could pull more & go through more. I know my Honda would outlast them in 10 years but I am not keeping my ATV's that long.
I was expecting more from a Honda machine!

Every machine is going to break at some point...Honda's just take a little longer to get to that point.

First off, if we are talking about the ES push button shfiting system here, I would have to agree that this has not lived up to Honda's classic design/quality standards. I will simply advise that a savy buyer will pass this one up!

As for everything else, Honda's are just as solid as they were 20 years ago!

Honda's automatic transmissions are needlessly complex, but yet reliable. Everybody elses belt drives are simple (but require a transfer case), but not always completely reliable. Anyway....auto trannies are for beginners and little girls who can't manage to figure out how to shift a manual........
