Default Bolt question

Hey guys,

I have an '01 400ex, and I have a quick question. I bought the atv and changed the oil recently, and when i did i noticed the bolts were not the original bolts on the oil filter cover. The one in the front is a longer 8mm bolt w/thread on only the end, and I think that factory. The other however was a 10mm bolt, and it stripped out the thread inside the bolt hole. I put an 8mm bolt in and it thread(short bolt) but now the 8mm long bolt wont thread. What can I do to fix this? Thanks

Default Bolt question

The orginal bolts are:
short bolt ----- 6X16
long bolt ------ 6X75

If they have 8mm bolts threaded in then someone already stripped the holes , so the orginal sized bolts can't be used..
The short bolt can be fixed with a 8X1.25 Helicoil.. BUT the long bolt just passes thru the clutch cover and actually threads into the crankcase and the only way to fix it is to remove the clutch cover ...

Those holes are originally 6mmx1.0 thread.
I am assuming when you say 8mm you are talking about the head size of the screw and not the thread diameter. If that is the case the the bole you refer to as 10mm will also be 6mmx1.0 thread. If that is the case you can use the "heli-coil" Velo mentions. If it is the long bolt hole that is stripped, then the clutch cover will need to be removed to make the repair.

Ok now I think your talking about the bolt "head" size ..?.. I'm talking about the thread size .. The orginal bolts were 6X16 & 6X75 and the heads took an 8mm socket , to fix them you need 6X1 Helicoil ...
What size thread (bolt shaft) are you talking about ..?..
