TRX500FA 2001 - newbie questions
#1
I just got my first ATV and had some easy questions for you all.
1: I know ATVs can get wet, but is it better for them to be in out of the weather when not in use? Can rain get in the ignition system or anything like that?
2: The manual says to turn the gas feed off when "not in use". Is this important, and how long is "not in use" - 1 day, 1 hour, or 1 week?
3: The exhaust pipe along my left ankle/shin gets HOT. I figure I could get seriously burned if I'm not careful. Is that normal? For all ATVs?
Thanks!

1 ... Yes rain can get in the ignition switch , they will freeze sometimes in the winter ..
2 ... We don't turn the fuel off if the bike is just sitting , but a bike that is loaded on a truck or trailer should have the fuel turned off what towing ..
3 ... Yes it is normal for the exhaust to get VERY hot .. It will melt rubber boots & rain gear if not careful ...

2.- It is most important to turn the valve off when transporting the machine! The float will bob up and down, and the excess will just get puked out the overflow and onto your trailer floor. You wouldn't believe how many of my friends complain that their toy haulers smell like gas, and it never occued to them to turn off their valves.......
Back in my dirt bike days as a kid, we were always taught to turn the valve off every time we truned off the engine. This was to prevent a fire, from gas flooding into the hot engine if the bike fell over. If we didn't do it, the adults in the group would be all over us!
Now with a quad, if I have the time I usually wait until my machine has cooled off before I turning off the valve.
3.- That's the reason I always wear a proper pair of riding pants! There are some nice plain black pants these days, so you don't have to wear flashy motocross colors and look like a motocross wanabee when riding your utility.

Enjoy the Rubicon.
Personally, I shut the fuel valve off when the machine won't be used for a week or so, and I find it starts easier if I do so.
Quads do get hot, but it shouldn't roast you too bad. Like Reconranger said, riding pants are comfortable and provide protection.

Hi
I have a 2001 Rubicon that I bought new. It has been a great ride so far with NO problems. I have added a plow, a fairing, utility box for the back, winch, this year I bought 27" ITP Mudlite XTR, a 2" lift and fender kit. If you have any questions that I can help you with, please feel free to ask. You can email me if you want at 'dooman@charter.net'
