The 300 rear end used open axles ...
The rear end is 1985-86 ATC250ES BigRed .. You can tell this because the TRX250 used an inside pivot bearing on the drive shaft side .. The ATC250ES used outside pivot bearings on both sides .. I would also guess the engine is out of the same ATC250ES ...

BINGO!!! You guys hit the nail on the head. I found the engine number. It is TE04E-5115909. 85-86 ATC250ES Big Red.
This 'hybrid's' VIN is JH3TE1302JK100061. 88 TRX250X.
It also makes sense since these guys had a garage full of ATC's.
Now, on to finding the manuals and getting this thing dirtworthy.
Appreciate all your help. Any other insights you have on these models or websites you know about would also be helpful.
Meantime, I'll keep you apprised of my progress.
