how old are you how much do you weigh what are you looking for... if you're 32 200lbs and are looking to race i'd say a 300ex is guarenteed to make you win everyrace... but they're good if you wear a small cup

A superb machine if you are looking for mid sized. The best tight trail quad of all time! Left hand clutch and chain driven so it is a real sport quad, unlike the shaft drive 250's which have limited suspension travel, and are based on utility machines. Great handling, descent suspension, and an absolutely bulletproof engine that will run trouble free forever! The stock tires are terrible, and should be replaced first thing.
The 300 doesn't get much attention. It is sandwiched in the lineup between the superb 400EX and the less expensive 250EX. In this class, also take a look as well at the new chain drive Yamaha 250. It is something like 50 pounds lighter than the 300! I hope competition from the Yamaha will awaken some interest in this much neglected class.......
If you are a smaller, lighter person, then it is a good choice, but if you are average size/weight, get the 400EX.

Yea the 300ex is a great machine. I just got throught rebuilding the top end on one. Man that design of an engine is just awsome! my customer put the oil filter in backwards (no markings on filter) and the engine was destroyed. I have never seen that before where its hard to tell which way it goes. It is a very hard machine to work on compared to other brands. I hope I don't see another one. It drives funkey too....like the 2006 honda 500 foreman I have too....Even though I work for honda, I'm not much of a fan. Check out the yamaha 250 raptor. it looks like a nice machine...even though I don't care for yamaha either.
The 400ex might be a better machine than the 300ex....I dunno, haven't worked on them...guess that says something. I have never seen one broke down....

If there were no markings on the filter, it wasnt a Honda filter. The honda filters can not be put in backwards, as they have a flange on them to prevent this, and they are marked as well. I have rebuilt many top ends on these machines due to backwards filters mostly Emgo economy filters... hey... ya wanna save 5 bucks on a filter.... pay 500 to have the top ends replaced.
Im not sure what you mean, they are hard to work on, they are the most simple straight forward engine I have saw. Compared to the other manufacturers you can tell a world about engineering differences, there is no comparison between Honda and the other top three, I have worked on all of them and much much prefer the Honda's ... when they break.

have you ever worked on a suzuki 250? or a 400? or a ltr450? I have. its twice as easy and better designed. just look at the way you reverse the 300....its poo. the way you have o snake the cam in.....the oil line goin to the valve cover, the silly timing chain adjuster, the zuki has a bolt in the head to keep the timing chain from falling in the crank case, the honda does not. poor design in my opinion.

HondaTechnician,
I agree, but remember, Honda still sells both styles of that filter and officially recommends the older version for nearly all models applcable for it prior to 1998,..... when they updated the oil filter covers to accomodate the new filter.
So it is very easy for someone to walk out of a Honda dealership with a Honda filter and install it backwards.

The dealership I worked at stopped selling the "old style" filter about 3 or 4 years ago.
And I dont recall Honda ever recomending the old ones either, at least they didnt tell us that.
And even if they did, the Honda filters are marked for fitment, if someone puts a Honda filter in backwards, either they cant read, or they shouldnt be changing your own oil.
Even with the aftermarket filters, if one doesnt know how the oil flows, leave it to the pros.
