finally got my 1991 running after 2 years of sitting. changed the fuel, oil, filters, cleaned out the carb. it will start but only with full choke. when i turn off the choke the opposite happens, it begins to rev really high, i've adjusted the idle but still does this. it will run sorta normal when i run it with full choke. also seems to run rich. (little bit of black smoke out the exaust)
any ideas?

The carb is not fully cleaned, all the jets will have to come out, including the slide needle jet, then all air and fuel passages will have to be cleaned. From what you are describing, the pilot circuit is not clean. Carb cleaning is a very very tedious job that requires lots of patience and knowledge of the carb, and its circuits.

with no experience in carb cleaning, will i be able to do this myself or should i take it to a shop? i've got the srv manual but is there anything i should know that's not in the book? i've taken the carb out but never pulled out the floats and jets.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Well, I dont know your mechanical apptitude, so thats a tough question.
If you have the manual, and some reasonable skills, there is no reason you couldnt do the job. The thing that is going to cause you the most trouble when cleaning the jets,(after you remove them) is finding the apropriate tools to clean them with. Heres a little trick for cleaning the Pilot or otherwise known as the slow jet. the hole is very tiny on this jet, and you have to be very careful what you run through this jet or you can ruin it very easily. A single wire from a wire brush is just the right size to do this job. On the main jet it is easier to find something to clean it with, just be very careful not to use anything to abrasive so as not to make the hole any bigger then it already is. If you have th service manual, you will find a blowup of the carb, and it should be no problem for you to do this job. Just take your time and be very particular with your work and be careful with the parts and you will do fine.

Hi HondaTech,
thanks for the advice. i pulled the carb and inspected all the floats/jets it all seemed fine. during inspection i noticed that a couple of air/fuel lines were clogged, cleaned them out and she fired up first try (no choke) yeeehaa! it's been a while. BUT. while it was running the vibration knocked over the battery and it grounded to the frame. well needless to say it fried the battery. i don't know how long it was grounded but the batt started smoking and melted a pinhole at the top. stupid question, is the battery repairable? can grounding on the frame fry any of the electrical? should i be worried ?
thanks again
