I put a new oil filter in..the old one didnt seal for what i could see....the new one works great...oil comes out just like in the clip u gave me to look at...but now it really smokes..prob cause its getting the oil that it suppose to have....what would cause the blow by and the smoking..I have 125 psi of comprestion and the motor sounds great..would the valve seals cause this smoke or maybe the piston oil ring.....

 

Im guessing from what you describe, the old filter was in backwards, what machine is this on? I am gonna guess you have major engine damage.

Ok, I went back through the posts and it seems you have the foreman 400.
You are gonna need an overhaul. If your capable of doing the work, you are gonna need to find out if the enginge is still stock, then you will need an oversize piston and ring set, have the cylinder bored, and closely inspect the upper valve train for damage(i.e. rocker arm wrist pins, push rods, valve stems). These engines are fairly easy to rebuild if you have the mechanical knowledge.

When done you will have a much higher compression, I dont know the spec offhand but Im guessing 150 or higher, I just dont remember.

 

Over the years, we have seen a fair number of these got the oil filter in backward posts.

Honda needs to put a sten warning about this in their owner's/service manuals. But, then you have owners who wouldn't read a manual if they even had one, and aftermarket oil filters that aren't marked like the OEM filters are......

 

Well, on aftermarket filters, some bargins arent bargins afterall.
If you stick with genuine Honda filters, they now have the flared edge on them, so they cant be installed backwards. Apparently you can still buy the original style, but our dearlership quit selling them.
I have said it before and Ill say it again, if your not competent enough to change your oil, and get the filter right, leave it to the pros.

 

thanks guys..i have the head off the engine...the valva stems are shout..should i try just to put new onece in or should i do the hole engine..

 

If the valve guides were bad enough to cause it to smoke like you describe, it wouldnt run in the first place.
If the oil filter was in backwards, you will require a complete rebuild.

 

the iol filter was in the right way but therubber gromet was junk so presure leaked by...one more think how do u get the rist pin out of the piston..i removed both clips but it wont come out

 

The piston/cylinder & the valves/giudes should be measured .. Sometimes the wrist pin can be tight to get out .. We have a couple of different pullers we use to pull wrist pins because it's not a good idea to use a punch & hammer ...

 

The connnecting rod must be pressed on the crank right..i have a little side to side slop in the rod is that ok

 

Yes there is side clearance for the rod .. On the TRX400 it is --- 0.05 - 0.65 mm (0.002 - 0.026 in)
